Online placement (E-Classroom)
Length of Placement 1 Semester
Improving Youth Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) through Theatre for Development Young people are at high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV in many Nigerian communities as a significant proportion of youths are starting sexual activity before the age of 15. Currently, sexual education and SRHR awareness in schools, churches and communities are not youth friendly or realistic and does not address young people’s needs.
This project will create space and opportunity for adolescents to talk about adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (ASRHR) and their experiences along with the provision of evidence-based sexual and reproductive health information. The messages will be coming from young people themselves, and therefore real and powerful. The project will work with adolescents, their families, communities and local governments to empower adolescents to explore their options, and obtain the knowledge, skills, guidance and support needed to realize their hopes and dreams. The project rests on the belief that young people are creative and energetic resources that must be cultivated and nourished. They are the agents of change today and the leaders of tomorrow. We must support them to fulfill their societal mandate. The project will use Art forms and Theatre for Development tools to package SRH information and life skills messages for adolescents, poor peri-urban and rural youths) in creative, attention-commanding, accessible forums within the targeted communities.
Student research may include a review of similar models that have been deployed, sharing lessons learned, the development of a training manual and facilitator’s guide for community drama production, and the creation of a video guide.
